Cherie DeVille Answers the Industry’s Most-Asked Question: Is Porn ‘Real or Scripted?’ Her Answer: ‘Both, and Neither’

In brief: Cherie DeVille: On Oct. 10, the 2027 AVN Awards co-host pointed followers to a post on her blog: “Is porn real or scripted? The answer isn’t nearly as simple as you might think.”

Every performer gets asked it eventually. Cherie DeVille wrote the answer down.

On Oct. 10, the 2027 AVN Awards co-host pointed followers to a post on her blog: “Is porn real or scripted? The answer isn’t nearly as simple as you might think.”

In the post on her website, DeVille gets to the point quickly: “Is porn real or scripted? The short answer is both, and neither.”

Professional productions aren’t “scripted like a mainstream movie,” she writes, “But it isn’t completely spontaneous either.” Every shoot involves “planning, communication, and collaboration before the cameras ever start rolling.”

She separates the work into types. Story-driven productions have dialogue and plot, and for those, she says, performers do memorize lines: “I’ve spent hours learning lines before we ever get to a scene.” Gonzo shoots skip the story, but the logistics, like casting, wardrobe, camera setup and timing, are still planned. Creator-owned content puts her in charge of the concept, location and organization.

Her key distinction is between “scripted” and “planned.” “Planning is about making sure everyone knows where they need to be,” she writes. “A script is about telling a story.”

It’s a clear explainer from someone who has spent years on sets, and a useful corrective for anyone who imagines the whole thing is either improvised or rehearsed down to the second.

DeVille was recently named a host of the 2027 AVN Awards. Judging by the blog, she’s also running a free seminar on how the sausage gets made, figuratively speaking.
