The orange and blue hearts are the Bears’ colors.
Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end who later coached the Bears to their only Super Bowl title after the 1985 season, died Oct. 9 at 86, his family announced, according to the Associated Press via theScore and UPI. The family did not disclose a cause of death, UPI reported.
The Chicago Bears remembered him as “Iron Mike” and “Da Coach,” noting that he revolutionized the tight end position as a player before leading the franchise to its championship.
Tributes poured in from across Chicago and the NFL, ABC7 Chicago reported, from former players, analysts and friends.
The post drew more than 500 likes. Grey has long been open about her Chicago sports fandom, and the hearts said the rest.
Ditka was the rare sports figure whose personality reached people who never watched a down. His sideline intensity, his mustache and his place in Chicago lore made him part of the culture, not just the game.
The AP described him as having “personified the toughness and grit of Chicago” as both a player and a coach, and his name remains tied to the city’s identity.
For one day, the timeline came together around a single name. Rest in peace, Coach.
