Zara Dar Finds the Real Horror of Halloween in Her Funding Sources: ‘My OnlyFans Subscribers Have Provided More Financial Support for My Research Than Any Academic Grant Ever Did’

Contains adult themes: this story discusses an OnlyFans creator’s posts. Nothing explicit is described.

In brief: On Halloween morning, OnlyFans creator Zara Dar posted that the scariest thing she could think of was that her subscribers have funded her research more than any academic grant ever has. She did not say what the research is, and we are not going to guess.

Some people spent Halloween on haunted hayrides. Zara Dar spent it doing a funding audit, which is somehow more frightening.

“Nothing scarier than realizing my OnlyFans subscribers have provided more financial support for my research than any academic grant ever did,” she posted on X at 9:16 a.m. Central on Oct. 31. The post had more than 400 likes and roughly 16,000 views by Sunday.

That is the whole post, and it is the whole joke: a grant committee is a panel of experts who read your proposal, debate its merits and, often, say no. A subscriber base is a group of people who just keep renewing. Only one of those groups has a “turn on auto-renew” button.

What she did and didn’t say

Dar does not say in the post what her research is, how much the subscribers chipped in or which grants came up short. So this story won’t either. The line works without the details. Anyone who has ever filled out a budget justification form will recognize the mood.

She also makes STEM explainer videos alongside her OnlyFans work, and her feed bounces between the two worlds without much ceremony. In August she shared a paper under a series she calls “PaperHub,” a name that does a lot of work in one word.

She has run this comparison before

The Halloween post isn’t the first time Dar has graded her platforms against each other. On Aug. 30 she wrote: “Comments on my PornHub videos >>> comments on my YouTube videos,” adding, “(Same videos btw).” Which suggests the audience paying for the work is also the one reading it most closely.

She has also addressed the business side with a straight face, or at least a short one. A July 28 post reads, in full, “when people ask for a discount for my OnlyFans,” followed by an attachment we did not view. We will assume the answer is no.

And in August she corrected the record on her name. “In my case, ‘Dar’ or sometimes ‘Darz’ is short for ‘Darcy,’” she wrote, saying people had confused her with another influencer. “I’m American, born and raised.”

The takeaway

Creators have long said fans are their most reliable patrons. Dar just put it in the language of academia, on the one day of the year when admitting something terrifying counts as seasonal content. Her subscribers have now funded more research than a grant ever did. The grant committees have presumably been informed, in the form of this paragraph.
